The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) is the world's largest organization serving the professional and business interests of attorneys who practice in the legal departments of corporations, associations, nonprofits and other private-sector organizations around the globe.
Overview: This is an outstanding opportunity to join an innovative and publicly-traded clinical-stage biotechnology company. Cogent Biosciences is seeking its first General Counsel to report directly to the CEO and be a member of Cogent’s executive leadership team. The GC will provide legal support for a variety of general corporate matters and advise management and the Board of Directors on legal risks and business strategies. Cogent is looking for a GC who is excited to and capable of helping the company grow strategically from a small to midsize biotech.
Company: Cogent is a publicly-traded biotechnology company developing real solutions to treat genetically driven diseases. With a focus on rational drug discovery and development, they are leveraging validated biology to advance precision therapies designed to address the true underlying drivers of disease and provide real hope for patients. The most advanced clinical program, PLX9486, is a selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor that is designed to potently inhibit the KIT D816V mutation as well as other mutations in KIT exon 17. KIT D816V is responsible for driving systemic mastocytosis, a serious disease caused by unchecked proliferation of mast cells. Exon 17 mutations are also found in patients with advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), a type of cancer with strong dependence on oncogenic KIT signaling. Cogent is headquartered in Cambridge, MA with a second location and future home of Cogent’s discovery research organization in Boulder, CO.
Experience: The successful candidate will hold a J.D. and have 10+ years of corporate and transactional legal experience including law firm training and in-house experience in roles of increasing scope and responsibility representing public biotechnology companies. Prior experience as a General Counsel of a publicly-traded biotechnology company or a senior-level in-house attorney within a larger biotechnology company strongly preferred.
Compensation:A highly competitive compensation package, including base salary, bonus, and equity will be offered for this position consistent with the candidate’s level of experience.
Relocation: This position can be based in either Cambridge, MA or Boulder, CO. Local candidates are strongly preferred but relocation will be considered.
