The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) is the world's largest organization serving the professional and business interests of attorneys who practice in the legal departments of corporations, associations, nonprofits and other private-sector organizations around the globe.
This position is responsible for leading the Health Plan & Payor Operations Practice Group of the Legal Department. The Health Plan & Payor Operations Practice Group is composed of health law lawyers whose primary accountability is to provide legal services supporting Kaiser Permanente operations as an HMO, indemnity insurer, and administrative services organization in its non-governmental lines of business. This practice includes regulatory, compliance and business development dimensions. The PGM is also a member of the Legal Department’s leadership team and shares joint accountability for ensuring the Department’s provision of high-quality legal services, achievement of the highest levels of customer satisfaction, establishing and managing the Department budget, controlling costs, and assisting the Kaiser Permanente organization in achieving its charitable purposes.
Manages the work of the Health Plan & Payor Operations Practice Group, including:
Cultivates highest and best use of legal professionals in accordance with Department model, which achieves high quality advice and service with lower cost by utilizing high-performing attorneys.
Handles the HPPO Practice Group’s administrative, financial, and governance functions, including but not limited to budgets, reserves, approvals, reporting, recruiting, etc.
Develops inhouse lawyers’ technical and strategic skills and creates opportunities for them to achieve recognition and leadership.
Cultivates and manages relationships with customers, including reaching agreements for the most efficient use of legal resources.
Provides appropriate oversight and feedback to individuals, including formal and informal performance appraisals.
Escalates legal and risk management issues to the appropriate levels in Kaiser Permanente.
Promotes a culture of excellence, accountability, learning, and collegiality.
12+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, primarily in health law.
Recognized (externally and/or internally) as an expert in one or more specialties within the health law area. Excellent legal judgment.
Demonstrates leadership capability, including experience in managing change efforts designed to increase efficiency and quality within the legal function and the larger organization. Demonstrated experience in leading substantial team-based projects, with documented leadership success in driving outcomes that have material value to the organization.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated success in fostering collaboration, cooperation and collegiality between senior leadership and legal staff, and among lawyers from various practice groups.
Demonstrates modeling of open, courageous, objective and calm dialogue with leadership and colleagues. Actively discourages indirect or covert communications.
Demonstrates self-reflection and self-development. Seeks out opportunities for learning and ongoing professional development, particularly regarding learning about the broader health care industry and legal issues outside one’s area of expertise. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
