Catholic Health Services of Long Island ("CHS") is seeking a highly experienced attorney to manage real estate legal services throughout the health care system. Reporting to the CHS General Counsel, the Senior Associate Counsel for real estate will provide legal advice to CHS leadership and will serve as an integral member of the CHS legal team. Senior Associate Counsel candidates must have strong management skills and the capacity to function well in a fast-paced, complex organization.
The Senior Associate Counsel for real estate will work closely with CHS clinical, administrative and finance leadership on real estate transactions and matters to advance the system's operational and strategic goals. The Senior Associate Counsel will oversee a broad real estate portfolio that includes major construction projects, substantial leasing activity, and real estate acquisitions and sales. Specific responsibilities include: negotiating and preparing leases and amendments; analysis of fraud and abuse laws applicable to real estate transactions and compliance in such transactions; oversight of large scale construction projects, including architect and construction contracts; purchase and sale transactions; license agreements; advice regarding real estate litigation; land use and zoning matters, policy development; analysis of existing and evolving federal and state regulations applicable to CHS real estate matters; and supervision of outside counsel and in-house staff.

Competencies, Skills & Minimum Requirements:
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
Licensed and admitted to practice law in NYS or another state.
A minimum of five years of real estate experience required; longer experience preferred.
Expertise in real estate transactions, including commercial leasing, purchase and sale contracts, closings, appraisal review, land use and zoning matters, and construction contracts;
Excellent drafting and negotiation skills;
Experience with health care real estate matters, including the fraud and abuse laws, such as the Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute, desirable but not required;
Strong analytic skills and professional judgment; the capacity to assess the business and legal terms of transactions and identify solutions to achieve closure;
Excellent management skills; the ability to supervise and collaborate effectively with outside counsel, in-house attorneys, brokers and other parties to support initiatives across the health system;
Ability to take initiative and work independently;
Willingness to learn and tackle new areas of law or legal problems; and
Excellent organizational, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
