Crowe LLP is seeking an assistant general counsel for its Oak Brook, Illinois office. The person in this role will focus on litigation, professional liability, and regulatory compliance. In this role, you will do the following:
Develop a thorough understanding of each delivery unit’s business risks and requirements and use this understanding to craft creative legal solutions to our clients’ problems;
Formulate strategy for and manage accountant professional liability and general litigation;
Understand SEC and PCAOB regulatory standards and apply those standards when leading the firm’s response to regulatory investigations and advising firm practitioners;
Respond to complex civil and regulatory subpoenas related to professional services;
Manage outside counsel for Crowe including case assessment, discovery, and settlement;
Provide advice regarding the laws, regulations, and professional standards relating to the banking or financial services industry, internal audit, SOX and/or the accounting profession;
Draft, revise and negotiate professional services agreements, software license agreements, development agreements, maintenance and support agreements and teaming agreements, as well as related statements of work;
Use contract management software to track legal review of contracts and underlying risks and issues;
Learn at a detailed level data platforms and related systems and their usage in the firm;
Supervise and mentor others in the development of their careers; and
Help lead transformation in the legal department by identifying technology and innovation that will create efficiency.
This position will report to the General Counsel and will have significant exposure to the company’s partners, management and all functional areas. In addition to being an experienced individual contributor on legal matters, the assistant general counsel must manage firm risk, learn general firm practice in a wide variety of areas, and act as a driver of good business process within the firm.
This position will support the General Counsel in the development of overall risk management and legal strategy and assist with its implementation. A successful candidate will be a leader capable of developing and maintaining close working relationships with the firm’s other business leaders. The legal department manages a large volume of requests, and candidates will need a strong ability to fluidly manage work load with client priorities.

Candidates must possess excellent business judgment, strategic thinking, interpersonal skills, flexibility, willingness to work on a broad variety of legal matters, superior writing and verbal communication skills, and a strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and SharePoint. The position duties and responsibilities will expand as the candidate’s understanding of the business and ability to manage business risk is demonstrated.
The following additional experience is desired but all are not required:
Working in governmental, accounting, and/or financial regulatory sectors
Handling bankruptcy claims and preference action responses
Providing counsel on corporate governance
Advising on a range of intellectual property matters as they relate to marketing, trade secrets, patents, and copyright
Managing compliance with document retention policies and practices
Assisting with M&A activity
7+ years of relevant experience in a law firm or in-house counsel role
Admission to a state bar, in good standing. Candidates will be required to take and pass the Illinois bar, but Illinois admission is not a prerequisite
