Our Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is seeking a Counsel to join our growing team in our Worcester, MA office.
Under the direction of the Vice President and Group Counsel – Corporate, the successful candidate will provide legal counsel to one or more departments or operating units, including agency management, corporate finance, field operations, marketing, strategic sourcing, technology and other operational functions. The individual may perform special legal assignments independently, and must demonstrate sound legal judgment, experience and reasoning. Insurance experience is not required, but a desire and ability to develop a solid understanding of the company’s operations and priorities, to complement the effectiveness of the role, is expected.
This is a Full-time, Exempt role.
Provides legal services to one or more departments or operating units, including the review, editing, drafting and negotiation of contracts in support of business line finance, agency management, technology and strategic sourcing teams.
Contributes to developing and maintaining ongoing relationships and accountability for the unit(s) being served.
Counsels management, as appropriate, under supervision of more experienced counsel.
May be responsible for handling, under supervision, major legal tasks involving complex legal, business and factual issues for which sound legal judgment, experience, and independent reasoning is required.
Evaluates factual information, and provides research, counsel, and guidance on legal questions or issues.
Prepares contracts, memoranda and other legal documents. Maintains business partner contact to receive assignments, render opinions, and consult and advise; some matters handled with limited supervision or consultation depending on experience level.
Juris Doctorate required with 5-9 years of experience, with at least 3 years of experience at a sophisticated law firm with a corporate practice, including SEC compliance matters and contract drafting, is preferred. In-house experience with a large corporation is a plus.
Candidate must be licensed to practice law and in good standing.

Is viewed as an internal resource capable of practically applying technical expertise to real business problems and/or opportunities.
Continues to develop in-depth knowledge and functional expertise in select professional disciplines.

Excellent written and oral communication, contract drafting and editing, and negotiation skills.
Strong analytical ability, critical and strategic thinking skills and attention to detail and project management skills to ensure appropriate execution.

Though not required, experience with property & casualty independent agency channel distribution matters, or a demonstrated capability to develop an expertise in comparable topics, is a significant plus.
