The Legal Counsel provides legal counsel to credit union management and assists in all aspects of the organization’s legal affairs. The Legal Counsel is responsible for drafting, reviewing and negotiating third party contracts and provides legal advice to management on a variety of consumer financial services and other legal topics.

Provides legal advice and counsel to management in all DCU departments related to a wide variety of legal, corporate, and business issues, with a strong focus on: drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts and third-party service agreements, and improving the legal team’s process for contract review.
Performs legal research, review, and analysis on a variety of consumer financial services and other topics, proactively and at the request of senior management and advises on interpretation and compliance.
Conducts legal and regulatory reviews of business areas, initiatives, and processes. Assists in the development of policies and procedures to ensure that processes are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and to effectively minimize operational risk. Reports to Senior Counsel and management any gaps and recommendations.
Coordinates litigation matters and works with outside counsel as necessary.
Conducts internal investigations and provides employment law counsel to the human resources department.
Cultivates, develops, and manages strong, lasting client relationships at the senior management level.
Updates knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; Maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
May include supervision of Paralegals and/or Staff Attorneys.
Completes all required Bank Secrecy Act related training annually and maintain knowledge of current BSA policies, specifically those related to cash handling (CTR filing) and identifying and reporting possible suspicious activity.

Education and Experience Requirements:
The Legal Counsel position will require:
A Law Degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school and licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of Massachusetts.
A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, with a combination of a law firm and in-house legal department and experience in financial services preferred.
Additional Eligibility Requirements:
Familiarity with the laws and regulations related to the banking/credit union industry and privacy.
Ability to work independently and manage internal client relationships, excellent organization and time-management skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong research and analytical skills.
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopier/scanner, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is a largely sedentary role. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and to reach with hands and arms.
