This position is a unique opportunity for an experienced IP counsel with strong business acumen, leadership abilities, and strategic capabilities, to provide pragmatic IP and business counsel. The position is located at Hollister’s corporate headquarters in Libertyville, Illinois, and reports directly to Hollister’s Vice President & General Counsel.
The Chief IP Counsel will be responsible to provide strategic legal support and business counsel to Hollister’s global IP function, specifically:
Partnering closely with stakeholders, including R & D, marketing and business units, take a leadership role and provide business-focused, proactive and reactive, strategic advice and counsel on Hollister’s global IP efforts and implications.
Oversee all aspects of patent prosecutions on a global basis, including the preparation and filing of patent applications and managing patent oppositions of every nature.
Proactively supervise and direct outside counsel globally on IP litigation and pre-litigation matters, with an eye towards effectiveness, while also achieving cost savings and other efficiencies.
Supervise and manage IP human resources, including at present a U.S. patent agent, IP specialist, and an administrative assistant.
Support acquisition and divestiture transactions involving IP assets.
A JD from a leading law school, with proven academic success.
Registration to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office is strongly desired.
15 years’ relevant IP law experience with a recognized law firm and/or corporate law department, specifically including patent prosecution and patent litigation. Prior trademark experience is helpful. Experience representing a global healthcare manufacturer is a plus.

Strong cross-cultural communication skills, including experience working with scientists, engineers, U.S. and non-U.S. business people and attorneys. Excellent interpersonal skills, with proven ability to be a good business partner.
Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
Past experience supervising and leading others is strongly preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely articulate complex legal concepts to a lay audience.
Demonstrated success working on a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; proven capability leading and/or influencing cross-functional teams.
Strong work ethic coupled with diligence, energy, and ability to act independently and adapt to changing priorities.
Proven ability to be cost effective and proactive in engaging, leading, and managing outside counsel (preferably on both a domestic and international basis).
Familiarity with applicable international laws relating to domestic and/or global manufacturing and to healthcare is a plus.
Experience with EU patent prosecution and oppositions (both at the European Patent office and in Country Courts) is a plus.
License to practice law and in good standing under the Illinois Bar or the Bar of any state that enables admission to practice as in-house counsel in Illinois.
