The position is a broad general counseling role with primary responsibility for all legal matters at Populus Group. The successful candidate will work relatively autonomously but report to the Populus Group Chief Financial Officer and be a member of the executive team at Populus Group. The selected candidate will provide legal advice to Populus Group’s senior management as well as Populus Group’s staff across the United States. Given the nature of Populus Group’s business, the selected lawyer will need a solid grounding in complex contracts, experience with labor and employment law, experience in managing litigation and the ability to address a wide spectrum of issues related to recruitment process outsourcing, temporary staffing, managed service providers and services businesses. The role will require monthly travel to Populus Group locations in Troy, MI, San Francisco, CA, Chicago, IL and Seattle, WA. Populus Group is looking for a dynamic, commercially astute, pragmatic, deadline driven lawyer who is willing to roll up his or her sleeves to get work done.
The role breaks down into the following major areas of responsibility:
Managing all aspects of the legal function at Populus Group
Serving as a strategic advisor to Populus Group’s senior leadership
General counselling in relation to a full spectrum of legal issues concerning the company, including complex contract negotiations, human resources and labor and employment, regulatory and compliance, intellectual property and trade secret protection, business development, and corporate matters
Managing employment-related administrative charges and litigation across multiple jurisdictions in the United States and Canada
Supporting the development of new policies, procedures and processes as necessary to mitigate risk within the business and to capitalize on new market opportunities
Managing the corporate secretarial function for Populus Group
No less than ten years of relevant experience in a very dynamic, quality-oriented environment. The right experience could have been gained in major law firms in the US and/or in the legal department of a multinational corporation with a reputation and track record for pro-active involvement in the business dealings of its group.
Experience managing and negotiating complex commercial contracts and other corporate matters.
Knowledge of labor and employment law and experience working with, and advising, human resources professionals and in managing employment litigation and administrative claims.
A professional with a high sense of ethics and integrity, who develops a relationship of trust with his or her colleagues in the organization.
A very creative lawyer with excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as excellent judgment and the ability to prioritize, allowing him or her to operate efficiently in a complex and fast-moving environment.
A sophisticated professional with a strong business sense, a service-oriented approach and the natural ability for developing constructive dialogue with business leaders as well as with outside counsel.
A very efficient lawyer, with a high level of enthusiasm, stamina and energy.
A self-starter, who is able to “roll-up his or her sleeves” and work proactively to meet the objectives of the business and the legal department.
Strong intellectual capacity and high personal standards of excellence.
Ability to work effectively in a multifaceted organization.
