Better requires process discipline and simplification
In this position, you will report to the Chief Legal Officer & Corporate Secretary and will advise on a wide range of strategic and operations needs. Your success will require a deep understanding of the customer and business while building great relationships at all levels across the company, including with executive leadership. You will also be extremely comfortable working cross functionally with partners such as HR, Finance, Compliance, InfoSec and business leaders and working to meet the businesses’ quickly evolving needs as Western Union continues to grow. Also, broad objectives include improving efficiency and productivity, identifying and implementing technology solutions to streamline and automate processes, promoting professional development, facilitating the focus of employee engagement, improving knowledge management and enhancing communication and collaboration globally for the Western Union Legal department and Compliance Department.
Your responsibilities will include working on special projects and developing playbooks and procedures assigned by the Chief Legal Officer, as well as plan strategies for solving various legal and business problems and lead the coordination and development and implementation of the WU Way practices and methodologies into the Legal department. You will also provide creative thinking to help identify and develop cutting-edge strategies for increasing value and reducing outside legal spend while maintaining high standards for legal support and optimizing the engagement practices with other departments and law firms. Also, partner with Legal teammates to improve the technology or process they use day-to-day and help provide new potential solutions and assist management in developing operational strategies and solutions relating to corporate policy. You will identify legal industry trends and recommend solutions to improve performance, retention and employee experience while driving positive employee engagement. You will spearhead the establishment of Western Unions external counsel program, while assisting with company compliance with existing regulatory and contractual obligations. (A non-attorney would be key to assisting with controls and monitoring). You will also be responsible for designing and managing processes to positively impact the Legal team’s efficiency and effectiveness including contract management and matter management. Also, you will consult on an ongoing basis on related issues with operations managers and executives regarding applicable laws and regulations, and develop a framework to identify, assess and implement regulatory developments and emerging risks and advise executive management and colleagues of the implications of such laws and regulations. And finally, you will develop and implement external counsel program and external counsel intake process, and communicate effectively and build effective relationships with legal, technical and financial audiences to help align various stakeholders.
For such a pivotal role, you’ll ideally have bachelor’s degree, JD preferred, MBA or business degree is a plus and strong academic credentials. 8-15 years post school experience, both outside consulting and in-house experience preferred. A proven track record of making an impact, developing and executing on strategies and delivering superior results in both the short and long term. You must have experience with a global company demonstrating strong experience in the areas detailed above and an understanding of litigation/transaction matter lifecycles. Experience working in a Lean and Agile work environment and an understanding of law firm or other similar professional services billing and pricing and experience with alternative fee arrangements. Also, experience managing contract administrators or other related management experience. To be successful in this role, you will need strong writing skills including significant experience in data analytics, including creating reports and dashboards and drawing insights for their results. Demonstrative project management skills with the ability to lead multiple small, medium and large projects simultaneously through all phases of the project lifecycle, including detailed project schedules, tasks lists and status change reporting. As well as understanding litigation/transaction matter lifecycles, and demonstrated financial acumen, including experience with budgeting cycle. A basic understanding of financial/accounting analysis including ability to develop cost-benefit analysis for various scenarios and have strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to produce and deliver presentations to a wide range of audiences. Experience with MS Office including; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and a high proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint. Having leadership ability and strong goal attainment orientation, analytical and negotiation skills, as well as a self-started, possessing a high degree of self-motivation with a bias for action, is key to this role. Also, a strategic thinker, who sees the big picture while managing the details, and drives results with a sense of urgency. And finally, a team oriented individual with the ability to motivate others.
