Located at Univar Solutions’ U.S. headquarters in Downers Grove, IL, the Senior Counsel will be a generalist attorney capable of providing legal support in a broad range of subject matter areas for various lines of business within North America. In addition, the Senior Counsel will supervise and give direction to outside counsel, particularly in relation to a broad range of US litigation matters, including a docket of toxic tort cases pending throughout the country.
Provide guidance and counseling in relation to customer and supplier contractual disputes and assist with pre-litigation matters, as needed.
Proactively supervise and direct outside litigation counsel on a wide range of litigation matters, with an eye towards cost savings and efficiency.
Provide support and advice in relation to employment law matters.
Assist with acquisitions and divestitures and other portfolio management activities.
Provide training to company personnel on substantive legal topics.
Assist with various compliance investigations, as needed.
Help with the creation and implementation of legal policies and protocols.
Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including customer, supplier, vendor, consulting and IT contracts.
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, with proven academic success. 5 - 10 years of relevant commercial generalist practice experience, preferably both in a law firm and in-house. A hands-on, pragmatic approach to managing a variety of commercial matters, which will include:
Experience in contracting (advising, drafting and negotiating) and in a broad variety of other substantive legal areas, including intellectual property, corporate transactions, and other related commercial corporate matters.
Demonstrated experience proactively and cost-effectively managing U.S. litigation and pre-litigation matters. Experience managing toxic tort matters is a plus.
Prior experience providing advice and counsel on employment matters as they arise.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely articulate complex legal concepts to a lay audience.
Demonstrated success working on a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; proven capability leading and/or influencing cross-functional teams.
Strong work ethic coupled with diligence, energy, and ability to act independently and adapt to changing priorities.
High level of integrity supported by sound judgment and ethics.
License to practice law and in good standing under the Illinois Bar or the Bar of any state that enables admission to practice as in-house counsel in Illinois.
