The position will help in maintaining, building and protecting Harman’s worldwide trademark and design patent portfolios, assist with marketing matters, and deal with a variety of issues related to anti-counterfeiting, content and product name clearance.
Partner with our in-house counsel and play a fundamental role in our law department managing, maintaining, and enforcing the company’s trademark portfolio including trademark renewals, oppositions, cancellations, filings, monitoring, and policing.
Communicate with and provide legal counsel for in-house domestic and international subsidiaries/business units on trademark matters including but not limited to proper trademark use in advertising, packaging, manuals, promotional materials, prosecution of trademarks, opposition/cancellation matters, and budgets.
Communicate with and provide legal counsel for in-house domestic and international subsidiaries/business units on design patent matters including but not limited to reviewing design disclosures, supervising new design patent filings and prosecution.
Assist with managing outside domestic and international counsel on global trademark and design patent matters.
Under the direction of Corporate Counsel, supports the negotiation, preparation, and administration of company-wide contracts, including agency, marketing, advertising, licensing, partnership and promotion contracts.
Draft promotions rules and marketing terms and conditions.
Conduct internal trainings on relevant issues.
Prepare and file documents directed to prosecution and maintenance with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Conduct international trademark clearance searches. Develop in-depth search strategies and provide analysis on legally available trademarks.
Prepare and supervise domestic and international trademark filings.
Provide legal counsel for IP related matters.
Evaluate watch notices for potential conflicts with Harman trademarks. Strategically oppose marks and file oppositions/cancellation actions when appropriate.
Attend and participate in docket meetings, conference calls, meetings with business units and counsel.
Draft and negotiate settlements, cease and desist letters and other documents.
1-3 years of trademark and marketing experience with a law firm; in-house experience a plus.
Domestic and international trademark and design patent experience.
Solid on-line research skills and knowledge of on-line trademark search databases including Saegis.
Experience filing electronic documents with the PTO.
Must be willing to take initiative to ensure completion of task.
Computer proficient, with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
Good oral and written communication skills, and excellent organizational skills
Must be detail oriented and demonstrate accuracy and consistency.
Able to manage numerous projects, meet deadlines and prioritize workload.
Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work independently as well as closely with team members.
JD from an accredited law school.
Must be admitted to the California or other approved state bar and in good standing.
Willingness to travel.
Willingness to work in an office in Northridge, CA.
