The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience managing a compliance program for a consumer products brand and will have a strong compliance generalist background. This is a hands-on, roll up your sleeves position. Candidates with strong stakeholding skills and experience building in-house programs as an employee, not a consultant, are preferred. Experience liasing with government affairs in DC, while not required, is a plus.
The Director of Compliance reports to the Chief Legal / Chief Compliance Officer and supervises one Compliance Specialist who specializes in Audit.
Detailed Position Description
The Director of Compliance works with the Chief Legal and Compliance Officer to create, implement and direct programs, policies and practices to ensure that all departments and their related business practices are in compliance with company policy as well as legal and regulatory requirements. He/she works with department heads and departmental compliance designees to evaluate compliance efforts, track laws and regulations, conduct audits, and implement necessary changes. Additionally, the Director of Compliance provides continuous advisement on compliance issues that arise, particularly related to areas of product development and distribution, consumer marketing, human resources, and information security. The Director of Compliance must be comfortable working in a role developing processes and procedures which are scalable to the needs of the Company as it continues to grow.
The Director of Compliance is responsible for execution of a broad range of compliance related activities that effect the entire organization. Because of the potential impact to the company of a compliance related issue, the stakes are high. As such, the Director of Compliance has the authority to recommend change processes, to work with departments to create and implement these processes, and to initiate and coordinate investigations of violations of law, regulations, or corporate compliance policies.
This position requires the maintenance of productive and positive working relationships with all internal personnel at all levels of the organization. The Director of Compliance works closely with the Chief Legal and Compliance Officer, legal personnel and Human Resources in the investigation and resolution of compliance related issues or concerns.
The ideal candidate will bring:
A minimum of 10 years of experience in roles of increasing leadership and responsibility in the areas of compliance, regulatory agency, audit, or a related consulting field;
Experience as a Compliance Generalist developing Compliance programs or managing a Compliance department;
Demonstrated expertise in a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures;
Proven leadership skills in developing, directing, organizing, managing, coordinating and monitoring complex processes;
Working knowledge of and ability to interpret or request accreditation, regulatory, and legal information relating to compliance;
Understanding of corporate governance and its potential implications as a component of an overall compliance program; Ability to understand, evaluate and make judgment on compliance related issues; Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and resolve complex problems;
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; Excellent interpersonal communication skills with demonstrated ability to interact well throughout the organization and within the Compliance Team;
Outstanding organizational and time management skills; Capable of effective planning and priority setting; Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
Ability to manage organizational change, problem solve, make and implement high impact decisions;
Excellent analytical skills and the ability to discern the practical application of regulatory and legal requirements;

This position requires both domestic and international travel up to 10% of the time in order to attend conferences, trade shows, and/or to visit factories or other company vendors.
Bachelor’s Degree required in relevant field of study; Certification via an accredited, professional compliance organization preferred.
