As Legal Counsel - Major Projects, the successful candidate will work closely with Motiva’s Senior Counsel - Major Projects and Paralegal - Major Projects to support Motiva’s Major Projects Organization (MPO), the business unit within Motiva responsible for delivering major refining and chemicals projects.
The successful candidate will be accountable for the following:
Providing general legal support to the Major Projects Organization
Work closely with MPO Supply Chain Management (responsible for contracts and procurement) to draft and negotiate contracts and purchase orders for equipment purchase, materials supply, site access, site services utilizing existing templates.
Assist in maintaining and improving contract templates, approved responses and standard procedures regarding contracts.
Summarize important terms and conditions from final contracts to report to various departments within the organization.
Assist MPO Supply Chain Management with administration of contracts and purchase orders.
Track, identify and report trends in contracting performance within the organization and assist in the development of best practices and procedures.
Monitor project and contract activity for potential claims issues, identifying opportunities for mitigation, and assist in handling claims and disputes arising from the projects.
Identifying legal risks, sensitivities, potential problems and proposing constructive, commercially realistic solutions to Motiva in the conduct of MPO activities.
Management of outside counsel
Collaboration and coordination with other support functions and lawyers in support of individual projects
Provide support to other commercial legal matters or projects in other business areas as needs and priorities may require from time to time
JD Degree, with a license to practice law in Texas
4+ years of experience in general commercial law including experience in supporting contracting and procurement activities
Ability to work in fast paced, high energy environment; manage multiple competing priorities in challenging time frames;
assist with development of structure and process in a quickly developing organization;
ability to be flexible and resourceful
Experience in major project procurement law, negotiating and administering FEED and EPC contracts for refining, chemicals or LNG facilities.
Experience representing owners or contractors, in a large law firm setting or as in-house counsel.
Experience resolving contract related disputes prior to potential arbitration/litigation.
This position will report directly to the Senior Counsel, Major Projects.
Major Projects Legal staff forms part of the growing Motiva Legal Department and may also be embedded from time to time within the Major Project Organization as necessary depending on project phase.
This position will be based in Houston, Texas and may require frequent trips to project sites, including Port Arthur, during various project phases.
Local candidates preferred, relocation not offered for candidates outside of commuting distance.
