Reporting to the Vice President, Assistant General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel will have a thorough understanding of company policies and objectives and under general supervision will manage responsibilities of the Law Division as assigned. His or her work generally involves handling or directing matters of importance and impact on the organization and providing assistance on matters of significance. This position is for an experienced attorney with thorough competence in several legal areas of concentration and broad-based experience, maturity, and sound judgment.
Providing legal counsel and support for human resources business partners and advice and counseling to other cross-functional partners, leading and directing employment litigation matters, working as a collaborative partner with outside counsel retained to represent Horace Mann and its affiliates, evaluating employee complaints and, where appropriate, initiating and/or providing employment law support for all HR internal investigations
Providing legal counsel and support to the Horace Mann Marketing Department on all Agent matters, and leading and directing agent litigation matters, working as a collaborative partner with outside counsel retained to represent Horace Mann and its affiliates
Providing advice on complex legal matters by utilizing legal expertise and strategic thinking to assess risk and recommend effective and appropriate solutions
Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a variety of agreements encountered in a corporate transactional and commercial context, including agency and technology agreements
Resolving regulatory inquiries by conducting research and drafting legal documents to provide recommendations and support lines of business
Providing legal counsel and support on insurance and financial services transactions
Providing legal counsel and support on Insurance Department Market Conduct Exams
Providing legal counsel and support on Corporate Compliance and Privacy matters
Effectively managing resources by anticipating expenditures and accurately forecasting resource needs/costs
Creating a positive environment by modeling cultural expectations and guiding leaders to reward performance, accountability, diversity and inclusion, flexibility, continuous improvement, collaboration, and creativity
Advising the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Corporate Secretary, and Chief Compliance Officer and other members of executive management with respect to the duties and responsibilities outlined above
Juris Doctor from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association
Admitted to practice law by a State Bar and be eligible to register as an In-House Counsel in the State of Illinois
Five (5) years broad-based, relevant legal experience with a mid-size to large law firm, corporation, or regulatory agency
Meaningful experience relating to insurance or financial services
Meaningful experience relating to HR and Agency legal matters
A strong desire to learn and assume ownership of highly complex, sometimes novel, legal issues
Strong academic credentials, including a law degree from an American Bar Association
Excellent analytical, organizational, detail-oriented, verbal and written communication skills
Ability to provide top-quality, proactive, accurate and effective legal support in a fast moving environment.
Ability to effectively work with management and other personnel
In-house legal department experience with a public corporation.
