JOB SUMMARY: Under general direction of the Senior Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs, Universal Creative, the Associate Attorney - Litigation is responsible for advising internal business clients, handling and resolving disputes, and - both independently and in collaboration with other in-house lawyers - managing, overseeing, and assisting with cases handled by outside counsel. The Associate Attorney - Litigation will work on a wide range of matters, including design and construction disputes, development-related commercial disputes, insurance matters, third-party subpoenas and other dispute resolution matters related to Universal Creative, the division of Universal Parks & Resorts responsible for the design and development of all Universal resorts, theme parks, attractions and hotels.
Independently and/or collaboratively with other in-house attorneys, resolve disputes with architects, engineers, ride and show vendors, contractors, and subcontractors that arise during and after the design, development, and construction of projects, and manage and work collaboratively with external counsel (as needed).
In connection with disputes and claims, identify, investigate, and analyze strength of factual and legal claims and defenses, contract interpretation issues, dispute avoidance, and dispute resolution options in order to formulate litigation and case resolution strategies for review and approval by UPR Legal senior management and to provide regular status updates on pending matters.
Draft and respond to demand letters, claims of lien, and other pre-litigation documents. Review and prepare or assist in the preparation of other legal papers, including pleadings, declarations, discovery demands, and third-party subpoenas, and assist, manage, and oversee external counsel handling court and other dispute resolution proceedings (including federal and state court appearances), arbitrations, mediations, and depositions. Participation in and attendance at such proceedings will be as directed and as appropriate for the matter and the current workload.
Advise business clients on best practices for project development, project management, risk management, dispute avoidance, and dispute resolution, provide legal advice on various project-related issues, and assist with negotiating, drafting and interpreting sophisticated commercial agreements and reviewing and editing associated technical specifications, including matters related to project development, procurement, construction, engineering and intellectual property rights.

EDUCATION: Juris Doctor or LLM required from an accredited law school
At least 5 years’ litigation experience, preferably with top-tier law firm or corporate legal department.
Substantial experience with mechanics liens, construction and design transactions and disputes, suretyship, and insurance is required.
Board Certification in Construction Law (or similar level of experience) strongly preferred.
Engineering background is preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Member of State Bar (Florida or California preferred).
Sound business judgment, and flexibility/adaptability to manage multiple wide-ranging matters, conflicting deadlines, and new areas of expertise as business needs change.
Proven ability and commitment to work both independently and collaboratively with numerous people at all levels throughout the company.
Demonstrated ability, in a positive, commercial and practical manner, to identify, prioritize and resolve issues quickly and effectively.
Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as Internet and web-based training tools.
Intermittent periods of frequent travel may be required to California, Northeast U.S., and international locations (including Asia).
