H-E-B’s humble start occurred in 1905. With her husband in poor health and with three small children, Florence Butt recognized the need to support her family and opened C.C. Butt Grocery Store on the ground floor of her family home in Kerrville, Texas with her savings of $60.00. From there, H-E-B has grown to more than $23 billion in revenue and more than 101,000 employees. It ranks 12th on Forbes’ 2017 list of “America’s Largest Private Companies.” It was named Retailer of the Year in 2010 by Progressive Grocer and, on November 13, 2013, it became the first company to be inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame. In 2018, Stores NRF ranked it as the 20th largest retailer in the United States.
H-E-B prides itself on its corporate culture of excellence and striving to be the best. It describes itself as a company that is in the “people business” and just “happens to sell groceries.” H-E-B values include Service, Heart, Drive, Innovation, Commitment, and Community, alongside the mantra of “always doing the right thing.” The Company refers to all employees not as employees but as “Partners.” For companies with 1,000 or more employees, Glassdoor ranked H-E-B No. 7 on the 2015 list of “Top Places to Work in the U.S” with reviews citing its care for its Partners as one of the main reasons it is one of the best places to work. In 2015, H-E-B announced its Partner Stock Plan making more than 55,000 Partners “owners” in the company. In 2017, the company was again recognized by Glassdoor and also received honors from Indeed (“Best Retailer to Work For”), and Comparably (“Best Workplace for Women”). The company is also known for its charitable donations, with five percent of annual pretax earnings given to causes in the communities in which it operates, including education and food banks.
