Overview: Reporting to the Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer Michael R. Minogue, the General Counsel will serve as a member of the Abiomed senior management team and maintain responsibility for the legal affairs of the Company, including the management of the corporate legal department. As a senior executive of Abiomed, the General Counsel will provide business and legal counsel to the Board of Directors, the CEO and the senior management team, and will be expected to provide leadership and guidance on all legal issues, including corporate transactions; litigation management; intellectual property management; compliance; regulatory matters; securities transactions; corporate governance; mergers and acquisitions; insurance, risk and dispute management; and labor and employment, among other areas.
The successful candidate will have exceptional leadership capabilities and excellent business acumen in order to serve as both a legal and business advisor and will lead and inspire the corporate legal team. The role has overall responsibility for the vision and leadership of Abiomed’s global legal strategy, the management of legal and compliance risks throughout the Company, and the management and execution of strategic and tactical legal matters and initiatives. The ideal candidate has previous General Counsel experience in a global life sciences company including medical device, health care, or a highly regulated technology company and is motivated by the development of the next generation of legal talent.

Experience: The successful candidate will have at least 15 years of progressive legal experience, including 5+ years’ experience serving as a Corporate Secretary of a publicly traded company, with a strong background as a corporate generalist who has handled business law and global affairs, complex corporate (including M&A) and securities transactions, public company governance, intellectual property management, litigation management, ethics and compliance, and legal department management, among other areas. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated leadership skills, strong management experience, and a proven track record of effectively handling a growing company’s global legal function. A combination of top tier law firm and in-house experience is required. Experience with a global life sciences company including medical device, health care, or a highly regulated technology company is a clear advantage.
This position requires an exceptionally accomplished attorney with a distinguished professional record and a strong business and patient centric orientation.
