The Role and Responsibilities
Roku is seeking a seasoned and motivated transactional attorney with a strong understanding of the digital advertising ecosystem, advertising technology and media buying to join its legal team. This is an amazing opportunity to play a key role in supporting the company’s rapid growth in advanced digital advertising.
This position will support and counsel Roku’s advertising sales and ad operations organizations. In this role, the successful candidate will draft, review and negotiate agreements with advertisers, ad agencies, ad servers, data suppliers, data management companies, measurement and analytics companies, as well as ad tech platforms and advertising technology providers. This person will also work closely with other members of the legal team regarding the company’s broader data collection, use and transfer practices. This includes assessing, drafting, updating, implementing and monitoring guidelines, standard agreements, platform policies, processes and procedures implicating data privacy considerations. A keen interest in staying current with new developments in applicable domestic and international privacy laws and industry standards in the areas of digital media and technology, Big Data and IOT, including the standards set forth by the FTC, DAA, NAI, IAB and the EU, is an important component of the job.
At least 8 years of transactional legal experience at a law firm and/or in-house, that includes working with internet, technology and/or media companies in the ad tech/data space (e.g., ad serving, programmatic, data management, measurement and analytics)
Familiarity with both B2B and B2C aspects of the digital advertising ecosystem
Significant experience drafting and negotiating SaaS agreements, digital marketing agreements and similar complex services agreements, including related privacy and data security provisions
Skills and experience necessary to advise on a broad range of the legal issues related to digital advertising businesses, including intellectual property, data protection, consumer protection and privacy issues in the context of advertising related technology (e.g., use of beacons, cookies and cookie alternatives across devices, programmatic technologies and matching of datasets)
Prior experience in other relevant areas such as privacy, general advertising and marketing
Familiarity with insertion orders and IAB terms and conditions for digital advertising
Experience working in a cross-department, cross-functional role requiring good client relationship skills, including the ability to independently solicit the advice and input of different stakeholders as necessary and appropriate
Excellent business and legal judgment. Superior ability to assess risk and determine priorities based on that risk assessment as well as the needs of the business
Outstanding organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and complete them on time
Ability to successfully manage aggressive deadlines while thriving in a fast-paced environment
Excellent negotiating skills, keen analytical abilities, a pragmatic approach to problem solving, as well as a track record of success in handling complex business and legal issues in a fast-paced, agile and evolving technology-driven business environment
Proven ability to quickly understand complex products and services, while identifying key issues and risks and offering creative solutions for business enablement
Bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctorate degree from a U.S. accredited law school
Licensed to practice law in the State of New York
Comfortable with occasional travel
