The HR Litigation Manager supports and promotes the successful achievement of Cedars-Sinai's mission by managing employment-related litigation, providing employment and regulatory law advice, developing and conducting legal compliance training, drafting and reviewing HR policies, and assisting with HR compliance-related initiatives and projects. The HR Litigation Manager promotes Cedars-Sinai's compliance with federal and state employment laws, including but not limited to equal employment opportunity and wage and hour laws and regulations. The HR Litigation Manager provides education, consultation and coaching to HR and management or other Cedars-Sinai staff.
Serves as employment legal counsel to Cedars-Sinai management and HR
Primary responsibility for management and oversight of employment claims and litigation, including oversight of HR Compliance Specialists and paralegals with regard to litigation-related work. Includes oversight and review of all phases of litigation, input regarding retention/selection of outside counsel and direct (“hands-on”) involvement as indicated.
Respond or manage response to, as appropriate, demand letters received from attorneys of current or former Cedars-Sinai employees or other individuals.
-Draft and/or oversee preparation of position statements in response to agency complaints filed by current or former Cedars-Sinai employees, including EEOC, DFEH, DLSE, DOL, etc.
Draft and/or oversee preparation of internal privileged & confidential communications regarding sensitive or confidential matters. Includes status updates regarding litigation, internal communications regarding investigation findings, recommendations to management, etc.
Conduct legal research and monitor regulatory environment and changes in employment law.
Assist with review of proposed recommendations for change in policies and/or processes as appropriate.
Monitor trends and assist in developing interventions to address issues as appropriate; provide privileged and confidential reports regarding same
Provide legal advice and guidance to HR and management relative to complex or sensitive employment decisions or situations.
Maintain currency in employment and labor law and serve as a resource to other members of HR and to Cedars-Sinai management.
Other projects and work as assigned.
Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
Juris Doctor required.
Member of the California Bar in good standing.
10+ years of demonstrated quality employment litigation experience, which must include a minimum of 7 years in a national law firm representing large, complex organizations, and a minimum of 3 years as in-house counsel in a large organization; experience with health care employers strongly preferred. Recent experience must include representation within the State of California.
Thorough and current knowledge of relevant state and federal employment laws and regulations.
Experience investigating and responding to government agency complaints.
Solid knowledge/understanding of human resources practice principles.
Demonstrated superior judgment and ability to influence outcomes in sensitive and/or high profile issues.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as listening, fact-finding, problem solving, and negotiation skills.
Demonstrated experience working in a high-pressure environment with multiple competing priorities.
Exemplary organization skills.
Excellent customer service skills, including demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all individuals at all levels of a large complex organization
