Major, Lindsey & Africa has been retained on an exclusive basis to conduct a search for a General Counsel for our client, Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc. (AFI) to be located in one of two corporate locations. Founded 1945, AFI is a family-owned home furnishings manufacturer and retailer that distributes home furniture products globally. With 25,000 employees, 800 Ashley HomeStores and 10 manufacturing facilities worldwide, in the last 10 years Ashley HomeStore has become the #1 selling furniture store brand in the world, and #1 retailer of furniture/bedding in the U.S.
To be located at either the Arcadia, Wisconsin or Tampa, Florida headquarters, the General Counsel will have a seat at the table with the senior executive team. The ideal candidate will come from the retail or manufacturing industries and have some related international background. Strong foundational training or undergraduate degree in accounting, tax or finance is strongly preferred. The successful candidate with have at least 15+ years of legal experience; prior relevant in-house GC experience (or as a strong #2 in a reputable, mid to large-sized legal department); a focus on risk analysis and mitigation; and proven leadership/management skills overseeing a department of at least three attorneys. In addition to demonstrated business savvy and strategic vision, the GC will have substantial experience with commercial contracts, regulatory/legal compliance, e-commerce, litigation management, trademarks, licensing, M&A, government affairs and international distribution. S/he will have lead responsibility for the selection, retention and management of outside counsel and manage, develop, and lead a highly qualified legal department currently consisting of five (5) attorneys and additional legal support staff.
