The Jackson Laboratory is seeking an Associate General Counsel based at our main campus in Bar Harbor, Maine. This new role will join an accomplished legal department and will advise scientists and business leaders on a wide variety of complex legal issues, including advising on commercial transactions and sponsored research agreements with biomedical research companies and organizations. This Associate General Counsel will negotiate and draft agreements and collaboration documents, navigate regulatory issues, and advise on IP, licensing, compliance and litigation. Reporting to JAX’s General Counsel, this attorney will have significant responsibility and senior level contact throughout JAX. While experience in life sciences would be ideal, a smart, well-rounded, accomplished and intellectually curious attorney from a wide variety of practices areas would be successful in this role, including corporate/securities, IP/licensing, commercial litigation and regulatory. This is a national search.
Provide counsel and guidance to clients across The Jackson Laboratory on life sciences transactions, regulatory issues and intellectual property.
Negotiate and draft complex agreements, including commercial contracts, licensing agreements and other collaboration agreements.
Develop, implement and improve compliance and regulatory policies, procedures and training, with a leadership role in developing The Jackson Laboratory’s compliance program.
Manage and bring to successful resolution commercial disputes and regulatory issues.
Manage and develop constructive and cost-effective relationships with outside counsel.
JD. with excellent academic credentials – strong performance at top-tier law school or outstanding performance at strong regional law school.
6+ years of experience in a top-tier law firm and/or sophisticated corporate or academic legal department. The ideal candidate will have 6+ years of experience, but more junior candidates with exceptional credentials, leadership ability and the desire to learn and grow in an accomplished and demanding legal department are encouraged to apply.
Sound and effective judgment and executive presence. The ideal candidate will have excellent client-service skills and the ability to advise senior research and business leaders with confidence, rigor and credibility.
Be a trusted advisor at senior organizational levels and have the ability to garner respect at all organizational levels. In client interactions, the ideal candidate will present ideas logically, effectively and confidently.
The ability to facilitate consensus and use it effectively to resolve conflict and overcome resistance.
The ability to drive complex and sophisticated legal matters to successful conclusion.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Excellent analytical, negotiating and drafting skills.
Effective leadership and management skills as well as the ability to produce superior work product while balancing multiple projects.
Membership in good standing in the Bar of the State of Maine, or the ability to become admitted to the Maine Bar.
Experience in one or more of the following practice areas would be ideal for this role:
Intellectual Property, including licensing transactions
Regulatory, particularly in a sophisticated research or academic setting
