Overview: The General Counsel is the senior legal, ethics, and compliance officer for the American Red Cross, one of the nation’s premier humanitarian organizations. This position is responsible for leading strategic and tactical legal initiatives, providing comprehensive legal advice to the President and CEO, Board of Governors, and various business unit executives, and managing overall legal risk and compliance for the Organization. The General Counsel manages the in-house legal function and the Office of Investigations, Compliance, and Ethics. The position reports to the President and CEO, Gail McGovern. This position is a member of the Red Cross Executive Team.
Experience: The Red Cross is seeking candidates who have significant legal experience gained through an extensive career. A broad based, generalist capacity and background will be vital to supporting the diversified legal issues encountered in an organization the size and breadth of the Red Cross. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience handling matters in a number of the following areas: commercial contracts, FDA regulations, transactions and financings, leases/real estate, the legal aspects of promotion, advertising and marketing programs, intellectual property, tax, technology, licensing, compliance, investigations, ethics, governance, pre-litigation and litigation counseling/management, trusts and estates, philanthropic activities, privacy and data privacy, human resources, employment law, non-profit law and insurance law. Significant experience interacting with, presenting to, advising and counseling senior level officials/C Suite management and boards of trustees is required. The successful candidate will be mission driven, a consensus builder, a team member, consultative, collaborative and think holistically/strategically about courses of action.

Bar: Licensed to practice in the District of Columbia or ability to waive into the D.C. bar within a reasonable time following the commencement of the position.
