As part of Coursera’s Legal and Compliance team, you will play a key role in increasing global access to a world-class education. You will help build Coursera’s enterprise, industry, government, and university partnerships and work across the organization (with sales, business development, product, and university partnerships) in service of Coursera’s growth and long-term success.
To be successful in this role, we’re looking for someone who is passionate about business growth and education. Advising on risks and liabilities of proposed commercial transactions and devising creative and practical legal solutions to meet business objectives
Drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements, including inbound vendor and consultant agreements and outbound commercial agreements for our enterprise, industry partnership and business development teams and other clients
Work closely with the Product and Engineering teams to advise on new features and business initiatives to ensure compliance with regulatory and contractual obligations
Assisting the Legal and Compliance team’s efforts in the preparation, implementation and refinement of forms, processes and procedures
Providing advice and counsel to business team leaders on a wide variety of legal matters, in consultation with other members of the Legal and Compliance team and outside counsel, as necessary
Obtaining and maintaining a strong knowledge of the company, its mission, strategy and values, product and service offerings, and objectives of supported business units
Providing substantive support for the rest of the Legal and Compliance team on an as-needed basis. Keeping abreast of applicable laws, regulations and industry guidance that impact Coursera’s commercial agreements and business practices.

At least 4-7 years of relevant experience, and prior in-house corporate counsel experience is strongly preferred
Must be admitted, and in active and good standing with the California State Bar (or able to register for California State Bar’s in-house counsel program)
Demonstrated experience advising clients in structuring complex commercial transactions
Ability to identify and resolve issues relating to privacy and data-sharing
Effectively represent the interests of the Legal and Compliance team at cross-functional meetings collaborating on everything from product design to business strategy
Strong and astute negotiation skills, with impeccable judgment
Highly analytical and have exceptional business and legal issue identification and problem-solving skills
Possess a practical, business-oriented approach to problem-solving and be able to effectively counsel internal clients by providing them with clear, concise and commercial advice, and creative solutions where necessary, on timelines to meet business needs and within the confines of the relevant legal and regulatory landscape
Operate autonomously while being a team player who brings a positive, “can do” attitude to the workplace and works collaboratively with other members of the Legal team and with internal clients
Be collegial, hardworking, confident, a self-starter and have a passion for results
Thrives in an ever-changing, start-up environment, and works quickly under time-pressure deadlines
Have integrity and a commitment to ethics
Experience working in or with higher education preferred
Marketing and product counseling experience preferred
