The New York Times Company has an opening for an attorney in its legal department, handling a variety of matters related to intellectual property and commercial transactions. The attorney will report directly to the Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary.
Primary responsibility for protection and enforcement of the Company’s intellectual property globally, including advising on copyright and fair use, IP licensing, trademark clearance and enforcement, and right of publicity.
Negotiate and draft agreements and counsel clients on complex commercial transactions, marketing, digital operations, brand and content licensing, film and television licensing, merchandising, third-party distribution, and vendor and technology matters.
Advise newsroom on freelance agreements with journalists and other content creators.
Provide pre-publication IP review of editorial content, videos, advertising, and marketing creative materials, working with the audio and video teams, photo editors, magazine editorial staff, and social media teams.
Provide general compliance advice and training; keep abreast of legal decisions, statutory changes and other developments, and advise clients on the same.
Provide legal support for the company's vendor management program.
Work collaboratively with other lawyers in the department on general contract matters, data privacy and security, and related needs.
Undergraduate and J.D. degrees from recognized institutions. Must be a member of the New York bar.
At least seven years’ experience, including strong knowledge of intellectual property law (copyright, trademark and right of publicity) and an extensive general commercial contracts practice. Previous in-house experience is a strong preference.
Ability to contribute to discussions of general business issues; to work well with a wide range of clients, from senior corporate management to line operating personnel; and to work independently as well as part of a team.
Ability to analyze complex legal and regulatory material, communicate their implications in clear and simple language, and recommend appropriate and defensible courses of action. Superior work ethic, strong organizational skills and ability to handle a large volume of work and balance competing demands of numerous clients under time pressure.
