Location: Multiple – Palo Alto, CA, Charlotte, NC or Knoxville, TN
Provides international legal services to EPRI under the direction of the Director Legal & Compliance, including legal advice, representation, and support to EPRI management and staff in order to facilitate achievement of the Institute’s goals, while anticipating and managing risk.
Analyzes proposed international bids and contractual transactions in Europe, Latin America, Canada and other regions (as assigned), and evaluates risk, documentation strategy and compliance with applicable law and policy
Reviews and drafts international transactional and other documents within EPRI’s risk and operating parameters and in teamwork with other attorneys (including outside counsel, as appropriate), contract negotiators and other stakeholders
Provides assistance to team on non-transactional international and compliance matters (e.g., export control, anti-bribery, data protection)
Participates on teams or internal corporate activities beyond specific legal area of responsibility (e.g., EPRI processes, policies, cross-functional problem solving teams)
Makes recommendations to senior EPRI attorneys or management on variance from standard policies and legal terms
Works on problems of complicated scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors
Mentors others in the department and seeks out learning opportunities for the department

Education Level and Years of Experience:
Law Degree from nationally accredited law school (or foreign equivalent)
Bar membership in good standing in the U.S. (CA, NY, TN, or NC preferred)
6-10 years applicable international experience, preferably both in law firm and in-house (energy or research a plus)
Familiarity with international compliance issues, including export control, anti-bribery/FCPA, data protection strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of at least one foreign language pertinent to EPRI’s business in Europe or Latin America (preferably Spanish)
Strong legal drafting and international negotiation skills
Familiarity with bids and consortia in Europe or Latin America (international organizations, E.U., government-controlled entities) strongly preferred
Familiarity with civil law jurisdictions strongly preferred
Uncompromising integrity, objectivity and professionalism
Understanding of the business and practical, non-academic, common sense advice
Strong ability to distill complex ideas orally and in writing
Strong ability to “translate” legal concepts across boundaries and communicate them in a culturally appropriate fashion
Enthusiasm for solving problems, constant learning and working in a team/collaborative environment
Highly competent in formulating a range of solutions to unique and first-time issues, including ability to formulate alternative paths
Maintains a collegial working relationship within the legal department as well as with other groups
Discernment of risk issues and practical recommendation for their resolution within EPRI’s structure
Exercises sound judgment, particularly in determining when to elevate issues and ask questions
Ability to give a credible “no” message when needed
Strong work ethic, and ability to manage varying priorities and deadlines through different time zones
Highly reliable, productive and responsive, able to multi-task, manage deadlines, and successfully balance competing workloads
EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
