Our client an international global corporation headquartered in Chicago, IL has exclusively retained Parker & Lynch to help them find an Assistant General Counsel of Labor & Employment. This position will report to the Company’s General Counsel and will work in a global law department that has attorneys on three continents and a senior management team based in Chicago. This is an exciting and unusual opportunity to join a company with a market leading product, solid fundamentals and growing market share.
The Assistant General Counsel will provide practical advice and counseling regarding labor and employment issues including discrimination, disability accommodation, hiring, performance management, discharge/termination, wage and hour, FMLA/ADA, employee privacy, non-compete agreements, protection of trade secrets, EEOC, employee benefits, and other relevant labor and employment issues. This person will report directly to the General Counsel and work closely with the Company’s Chief Human Resources Officer and the other members of the Human Resources Leadership Team. It is anticipated that there may be some international travel.
Our client’s preference is to hire a proven in-house counsel for whom the role would be the “next step” in their career development. The ideal candidate possesses strong US labor and employment experience.
Interested applicants should possess the following qualifications:
J.D. from a respected law school. Excellent academic credentials.
7+ years of professional legal experience. Has worked at a large law firm and preferably in house at a corporation.
Has experience interacting with and supporting senior human resources leadership teams.
Strong U.S. labor and employment background who could grow into a broader role involving both domestic and international labor and employment matters.
Experience in discipline, counseling, and termination of employees, including determining whether severance is appropriate as well as providing written warnings and separation agreements.
Assisting in specialized language on offer letters, sign on bonus agreements, retention agreements, and promissory notes.
Provide advice and counsel on all aspects of LOA administration, including drafting notification letters, reasonable accommodation letters, workers compensation carrier and medical provider negotiation, FMLA, ADA, PDL, CFRA and company leave policies.
Handle all issues associated with employee drug testing
Experience with handling and creating policies for conducting background checks and the process for inquiring into hiring/interviewing concerns for potential new hires
Expertise in handling misconduct issues including investigations of potential misconduct.
Provide day-to-day advice on workers comp claims and wage & hour disputes
