Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc.'s national Legal Department is seeking to hire an attorney for its Public and Professional Liability Practice Group. This attorney will be located in Oakland, California. The position will include management of a broad range of claims, including medical malpractice, premises liability, hospital and professional provider disputes, privacy violations, vendor disputes, and coverage and managed care issues. Additionally, this position will provide legal advice to employees of KFH, KFHP and TPMG on a wide range of medical legal issues including but not limited to response to subpoenas and other legal process, consent, HIPAA privacy and security matters, release of medical information, statutory reporting requirements and other healthcare related subjects. Experience in related areas, medical malpractice and managed care litigation is required. The position will also work closely with colleagues specializing in provider operations, as well as with colleagues supporting other Kaiser regions.
Assists and supports more senior level attorneys on providing legal advice and case recommendations.
Under the supervision of more senior attorneys, may provide legal advice to one or more assigned departments or units of the organization.
Undertakes research and reviews standard documents and contracts; prepare and drafts legal memoranda and documents.
Provides research, factual information, counsel and guidance on basic to moderately complex legal questions or issues.
Minimum of 7 years of practice handling provider disputes and medical malpractice claims preferably both in house and as an outside litigator.
Broad experience responding to discovery requests in litigation especially as they relate to managed care and Kaiser’s integrated delivery systems.
Experience understanding medical terminology and the ability to read and analyze medical records, using Kaiser’s electronic medical record (KPHC).
Experience using claims management databases
Demonstrated experience meeting with claimants and experts in complex litigation.
Emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent analytical and written/ verbal communication skills.
Ability to learn the practical aspects of applied law and functions of the business.
Ability to provide counsel to management regarding legal questions and issues within specialty
Strong service orientation.
Maintains current knowledge of specialty area.
Ability to work effectively both independently and in team settings.
Desire to develop a versatile and diverse health care practice.
Juris Doctorate degree.
California State Bar license or willingness to obtain California State Bar license required.
