The Director of Employee Relations, located in Downers Grove, Illinois, is responsible for providing legal advice and assistance to Human Resource Professionals and managers on employment related matters and protects the Company’s interests in all areas of Labor and Employment law. This position will also assist with other general legal matters, including litigation support.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Negotiate and administer labor contracts throughout the U.S.
Provide human resource and employee relations advice and counsel to supervisors, manager and executives, including matters involving progressive discipline, discharge, discrimination, wage-hour requirements, etc.
Represent Company in federal, state and local administrative actions, including charges involving NLRB, EEOC and DOL
Supervise outside counsel’s representation of Company in employment related litigation including wrongful discharge, discrimination, non-competition/trade secrets and other claims
Develop and deliver manager and supervisor training programs in Labor Negotiations, Employee Relations, EEO/AA, Union Avoidance, etc.
Advise Human Resources of changes in federal, state and local laws that impact workforce
Work with HR Managers to develop and/or interpret personnel policies and procedures
Interest in working on other general legal matters, including litigation
Interpret federal, state and local statutes, case law and labor contract language; respond to manager and employee concerns about employee relations
Analyze difficult Human Resources issues of all types, and arrive at solutions that are best for the Company and the people involved
Ability to make difficult decisions on appropriate course of action in variety of complex employee relations and compensation situations
Authority to determine appropriate pay, benefits and labor actions for union contracts
Admitted to practice law in a state
Superior negotiation and interpersonal skills
Experience working in corporate environment
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of management, field personnel, outside counsel and support staff
Ability to work well under stressful conditions
Strong leadership ability and orientation for action, tempered by discernment, good judgment and patience
Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle diverse workload
Broad knowledge of labor and employment law trends
Training and presentation skills
Law degree required
Minimum five years of experience in labor relations and employment law
