Timely provide consistent high quality legal support for all Office Depot real estate & construction activities in North America, including in the U.S. Territories, such as Puerto Rico, in order to achieve Office Depot’s strategic growth goals while minimizing legal risk. This position will be responsible for supervising all real estate attorneys, paralegals & support staff. Will oversee &/or directly participate in the negotiation & execution of new store leases in order to further the Company’s strategic growth goals. This is primarily accomplished through the effective use of a limited amount of selected outside counsel who take the lead responsibility in drafting & negotiating each Office Depot lease on a fixed fee basis & internal coordination with real estate & construction business counterparts in order to spot & address business & legal issues. Provide hands on guidance and decision making on countless legal issues arising in individual leases in order to ensure that Office Depot’s lease terms are consistent & structured in such a way as to provide the maximum degree of certainty to those operating under the lease while minimizing legal risk. In addition, will supervise real estate legal work relative to our supply chain & BSD locations.
This position requires a Juris Doctor Degree and admission to and in good standing with at least one State bar association. Must also qualify for Authorized House Counsel in Florida. Minimum 10 years experience. Must possess full knowledge of real estate and construction law, with a particular emphasis upon retail leasing. This includes the proven ability to meticulously draft and skillfully negotiate a broad range of real estate documents. Strong knowledge and understanding of business needs with he associated ability to analyze and solve problems independently, quickly and completely. Should also be able to persuasively communicate clearly to senior management and outside counsel.
