This new position will be based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where the legal and business leadership of the Company’s new Cabin Interiors unity will be located following the planned acquisition by Rockwell Collins of B/E Aerospace.
The position will report directly to Damon Terrill, Assistant General Counsel. He is based in the company’s headquarters office in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Principal Labor & Employment Counsel, will be responsible for:
Managing all legal aspects of labor and employment matters as they arise out of the Company’s Cabin Interiors business.
Providing proactive, high quality, timely and cost effective legal advice and services to management with respect to labor and employment matters.
Effectively managing litigation, arbitration, charges, grievances, claims, other matters in dispute, and investigations involving labor and employment issues.
Developing and implementing strategies to promote compliance with labor and employment laws and regulations.
Managing outside counsel representing the Company so that the desired results are obtained in a timely and cost effective manner.
Actively partnering and advising on labor and employment law in the following areas:
Compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations
Governmental investigations and audits
Employee life cycle:
Terms and conditions of hiring
Internal disciplinary proceedings and grievances
Terminations of employment
Labor and employment related issues pertaining to unions, works councils, labor negotiations, and trade union agreements.
Training, policies and procedures.
Providing proactive legal support for the development, negotiation and execution of Company business strategies.
In addition to performing these primary duties and responsibilities, the Principal Labor & Employment Counsel will:
Actively support merger, acquisition, and divestiture due diligence activities, and assist in related integration efforts.
Investigate potential violations of law or of the Company’s Standards of Business Conduct, and take appropriate actions, as necessary, to resolve such matters.
Proactively assist in the prevention of violation of laws and regulations that could damage the Company’s reputation as a law abiding and ethical company, through legal compliance training and counseling, or otherwise.
Actively monitor changes in applicable laws and regulations and assure the Company’s compliance with them.
Closely coordinate with the Assistant General Counsel, Cabin Interiors (planned), and with the Assistant General Counsel, Employment & Labor, on all significant legal matters, and ensure that they are kept abreast of the status of legal and compliance matters.
Actively engage in Rockwell Collins Law Department and enterprise Lean initiatives.
Perform other projects as may be assigned by management.
Have a Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school, and be a member in good standing of the Bar of at least one state, with eligibility for admission to practice in North Carolina.
Have at least 8 years of law firm, government, and/or corporate experience handling a broad array of labor and employment legal issues and litigation.
Have at least 4 years of experience as in-house counsel for a global corporation.
Possess a thorough understanding of U.S. and international employment and labor laws and regulations.
Be a self-starter, able to handle many complex legal matters simultaneously.
Have sound judgment and risk awareness across multiple substantive areas of the law.
Have refined risk assessment skills, with strong, pragmatic business acumen and the ability to recognize the business consequences of legal advice.
Have excellent interpersonal/people skills (including the ability to influence and build relationships without the benefit of direct authority) and the ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization.
Possess a coachable attitude and be able to navigate well in an environment in which he or she may have much or little oversight.
Possess gravitas, judgment and self-confidence, but also respect for others, regardless of position, and desire to work as a team member with all levels of management.
Possess keen intellect, excellent communication skills and credibility so as to interact effectively and influence management at all levels.
Be guided by unwavering integrity, and a strong ethical center.
Have the ability to manage outside counsel actively, effectively and efficiently, and to control and provide direction on the strategies to be implemented on legal matters which need outside counsel support.
Be willing to travel.
