The Food Counsel will provide legal support on a broad spectrum of regulatory, food safety and government policy issues concerning Campbell’s global businesses. The lawyer also will oversee the regulatory compliance of a portfolio of iconic brands, including Campbell’s soups, V8 beverages, Pepperidge Farm baked goods, Goldfish baked snacks, Swanson broths, Prego Italian sauces, Pace salsas and sauces, Plum Organics foods, Bolthouse Farms foods, Garden Fresh Gourmet sauces, Kjeldsens,Royal Dansk and Arnott’s baked biscuits and snacks.
The Food Counsel will have an especially important role in support of Campbell’s Quality Assurance and Food Safety functions in a global environment marked by increasing government focus on food safety and consumer protection. The lawyer will also advise various R&D and marketing teams on innovation, product formulation, claims and labeling claims, among other matters.
The Food Counsel position will be based in Campbell’s World Headquarters in Camden, New Jersey, and this individual will be a member of the Campbell Legal Department. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with numerous clients in a cross-functional, team-oriented environment.
Work with the Global Operations Quality teams on a variety of compliance issues, including oversight of food safety programs and government inspections.
Support the Company's crisis management organization in connection with product investigations, recalls, and market withdrawals. Serve on one of the business unit crisis management teams.
Support the Campbell global businesses, particularly regulatory and marketing functions, in the innovation pipeline. Advise on ingredient selection and labeling claims.
Work closely with the in-house litigation team to defend labeling-related class action litigation matters.
Effectively manage outside counsel relationships and related budgeting matters.
Share responsibility with advertising and IP teams for review of Company advertising, marketing and social media materials for food law compliance.
Advise on food law, food safety and compliance issues and conduct due diligence in connection with acquisitions, divestitures and other transactional matters.
Conduct regular compliance training related to food law, legal risks, crisis management, and regulatory issues.
Support organization-wide legal projects and initiatives, as necessary.
Provide counsel on additional matters as needed and directed by management.
Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school.
A member in good standing of any state bar (if not already admitted in New Jersey, the successful candidate will need to obtain a New Jersey in-house bar admission).
At least five years of law firm and/or in-house experience. Food law experience is preferred, but candidates with experience in FDA regulatory compliance outside of the food industry will be considered. Excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written.
Demonstrated team player with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to interact effectively and efficiently with business partners on a daily basis and operate with limited supervision.
