This hire will join a team of corporate counsel supporting the product, engineering and marketing teams. In this role, you will provide support for Ancestry’s family history and DNA products and services.You must have excellent judgment in balancing legal risks with business strategy and a proven ability to quickly ramp, learn new areas of law, support multiple projects, and independently function in a demanding fast-paced environment.You must also be a skilled collaborator, as part of the role will include seeking appropriate input from other legal specialists in the group.

Provide cross functional, international legal support to the Ancestry business, including supporting the product development, engineering, and marketing teams
Advise operations, product and engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle, from initial idea to launch, on a broad range of compliance issues including cutting edge and first impression legal issues.
Respond promptly to a wide range of legal requests from engineering, product management, and other business groups on product features and functionalities.
Provide pragmatic day to day and strategic advice to minimize legal risks while advancing business interests and ensuring an excellent customer experience.
Research, analyze, advise, train, and provide legal direction to internal stakeholders on legal, regulatory and compliance issues, including privacy, data security, marketing, and consumer protection laws, in connection with the development, marketing and commercialization of Ancestry’s products and service offerings
Review marketing communications and advertising copy related to existing and future products and services
Interface with external law firms
J.D. with excellent academic credentials from an ABA accredited law school, with an active license to practice law and approximately 4-6 years of experience
In-house experience advising business, product and/or engineering teams on legal, regulatory, and compliance issues relating to the development of Internet and mobile products and services
Experience with an online, consumer-focused, international company
Excellent lawyer (commercial / IP preferred) with good commercial acumen
Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with limited supervision
Keen to understand, learn about and integrate with the business and to develop the role in-line with business requirements
Ability to develop and manage relationships at key levels in the business
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels both written and verbally
Excellent organisational and analytical skills
Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
