Will work in all phases of our legal practice, including legal research, document review, contract and document preparation, risk identification and remediation and regulatory oversight, but with primary focus on regulatory compliance for life insurance/reinsurance operations in the Americas including: assist in the establishment and/or localization and implementation of SCOR standard policies, procedures, processes and best practices to promote compliance with applicable laws and contractual obligations to mitigate risk; participate in the conduct of training for such policies. Work on the preparation of required filings with State, Federal and (as appropriate) non-US national regulators; as necessary recommend changes in compliance practices to Hub and management in line with changes to laws and regulations to ensure compliance with State, Federal and National laws, regulations and mandates applicable to the various operations.
Key duties and responsibilities
Provide legal advice and counsel to the business lines and their leadership.
Draft agreements with affiliates, as requested by business lines, which are to be filed with regulators
In conjunction with Hub Compliance Team:
actively monitor life Americas implementation and compliance with applicable compliance and regulatory processes.
assist in the development and conduct of compliance training for SGL Americas.
work toward the implementation of required policy and procedure changes for SGL Americas by monitoring DOI and other regulatory information sources, Identifying regulation changes and working with Compliance management to communicate change impact to business leaders, recommending solutions and ensuring organizational compliance
Collaborate with individual licensees, corporate attorneys, Hub and Group Compliance and/or other contributors as needed to effectively communicate necessary changes and requirements in all targeted states
Monitor and research state, Federal and National requirement changes develop and communicate recommended courses of action and facilitate organizational decision making
Document drafting, review, negotiation and completion within expected timeframes and to a high standard of quality.
Accurate and timely production of all assigned tasks.
Identify and protect the Company’s interests in all matters.
Work independently and with minimal guidance from other legal staff.
Document work and maintain departmental records.
Represent the Company in a professional manner throughout the insurance/reinsurance industry through interaction with external stakeholders (state regulators, intermediaries, ceding companies) and at meetings as appropriate.
Legal research as may be required to perform functions.
Issue investigation, internal client interviews and reports to internal stakeholders
As appropriate, retain and manage outside counsel to ensure high quality results within pre-established budgets and expectations.
Assume significant roles in divisional projects, under the supervision of senior attorneys, to enable the business units/internal clients to achieve goals.
Provide clear, concise legal advice, grounded in thorough knowledge of Company business and process, to senior business unit leadership.
Proactively engage in the business processes of assigned internal clients so as to anticipate needs and risks and work with the clients to manage the same.
Minimum Experience: 5-9 years in private practice or corporate environment. Insurance or reinsurance experience preferred, but not required.
Must possess excellent research and writing skills.
Must be a self-starter, capable of engaging internal clients, understanding their business issues and concerns, and delivering quality legal advice and consultation in a timely fashion.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced, intellectually stimulating environment with professionals from multiple disciplines, including actuarial, finance, operations and sales and marketing.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner is critical to success.
Ability to work on multiple assignments and projects simultaneously.
Must deliver high quality work product to clients within established timeframes.
Must be able to work with minimal supervision and instruction.
Demonstrated ability to lead projects and team assignments with minimal supervision and instruction.
