Advises human resources and management on a wide variety of personnel matters that involve legal risk including, but not limited to, recruitment and hiring, terminations, reductions in force, internal investigations, performance management, EEO compliance, leaves of absence, disability accommodation, harassment and retaliation, employment contracts, wage and hour compliance, and privacy matters.
Supports employment law compliance efforts across the company.
Prepares and conducts management training on a variety of legal topics and best practices.
Conducts and/or supervises investigations of internal complaints of unlawful conduct.
Investigates, prepares position statements, and negotiates resolutions for federal and state agency charges and other pre-litigation demands.
Supervises outside counsel on employment litigation matters; acts as liaison between outside counsel, management, and human resources.
Reports to management on pending employment charges, litigation, and arbitrations.
Interacts with benefits, payroll, security, IT, risk management, internal audit, and other departments as needed to help resolve personnel matters that involve potential legal risk.
Assists with corporate due diligence reviews for prospective acquisitions.
Prepares and/or reviews personnel policies, contracts and forms for compliance and effectiveness.
Interprets employment laws, rulings and regulations.
Stays current on new/changing employment laws, regulations, and agency positions; advises human resources teams and management as needed.
JD degree plus a minimum of 4 years’ experience as an attorney specializing in labor and employment law, with an emphasis on providing advice and counsel to management and human resources. Solid understanding of U.S. and California employment law. Must be licensed to practice law in the United States. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with human resources and management. Excellent writing skills. Effective interpersonal and legal skills necessary to interact and advise all levels of the company on sensitive and complex matters. Ability to effectively multi-task and work under project deadline requirements. Must also be self-directed and proactive. Occasional travel required.
