Position Overview: Best Buy has an immediate opening at its Richfield, Minnesota, corporate headquarters for an attorney to serve in the position of Corporate Counsel – Privacy and Information Policy. This position will assist the Director/Sr. Counsel with the provision of day-to-day legal advice and counsel in all aspects of privacy and information policy, and other related compliance areas.
Provide legal advice, and perform legal research and contract review concerning:
Understand full scope of a corporate privacy and security compliance program including the need for and requirements of policies & training, data flows, risk assessment, and a vendor management program.
Support the Privacy and Information Policy Group’s team members, the legal department, and the associated legal departments of Best Buy’s foreign subsidiaries.
Identify potential areas of privacy vulnerability and risks for Best Buy and propose solutions/corrective action plans to prevent/mitigate/resolve such risks.
Assist with investigating, managing, and resolving data incidents.
Assist with investigating, managing, and drafting responses to inquiries by customers, state and Federal authorities, and other third parties.
Work with other members of the Group, manage, drive, and complete projects that train, protect, and support Group’s missions.
Understand full scope of a Corporate Records Management program.
Draft and revise policies, procedures, correspondence, memorandums, waivers, and communications.
Interact comfortably and partner with Best Buy’s various departments, employees, and executives, ensuring that the legal needs for their initiatives are met and their questions answered. Ability to problem-solve and provide solutions that support their objectives.
Provide support and counsel across the organization including:
various internal Best Buy departments (such as Internal Audit, Risk Management, IT, Marketing, Services, Human Resources, Corporate Communications, Public Relations, Government Relations, customer contact, and Covered Entity (HIPAA)), and
various support groups (such as information security, project teams, Ethics Office, Information and Records Management, E-Discovery, and Procurement).
Research, understand, and inform others of Federal and state privacy laws, rules, regulations, cases, administrative decisions, and industry trends.
JD degree from an ABA accredited law school, admitted to practice law in at least one state, and outstanding academic credentials (if not licensed in Minnesota must be willing to become licensed in Minnesota).
A minimum of five years of demonstrated work experience drafting and negotiating sophisticated contracts for commercial and related transactions whether in private practice or as in-house counsel.
Minimum of 5 years of practice (either as an attorney in-house or in a law firm) is required with a minimum of 4 years of practice in privacy.
Experience in e-discovery in the in-house environment and records management legal matters is highly preferred and preference will be given to candidates with this experience.
Superior written and oral communication skills evidencing the ability to professionally draft contracts that protect Best Buy’s interests, successfully negotiate favorable terms, and clearly articulate recommendations to and from business clients.
Highly professional and adept at finding creative and practical solutions.
Strong organizational and analytical skills, a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, excellent client relation skills, detail oriented, and an ability to work quickly and independently in a fast paced corporate environment.
