The global Legal Department is a diverse and dynamic organization within our firm, headed up by the General Counsel, with 40 lawyers worldwide. The Legal Department provides comprehensive legal services and broad risk management support to our firm’s leadership, consultants and support staff.
This position will be based in Atlanta and will focus on employment matters for McKinsey globally. The individual will work closely with the Associate General Counsel who leads the “People” team of lawyers as well as other lawyers on that team and in the department, and will be expected to liase with a number of individuals within the Firm (e.g., Partner Personnel, Partner Compensation, HR managers, Professional Development and Staffing professionals, office and sector leadership, local administrative leaders, leaders in the Firm’s diversity & inclusion efforts, the Firm’s Ombuds), as well as outside counsel worldwide.
This position encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities, both within and outside the U.S., including:
Participating in the development, implementation and interpretation of Firm strategy and policy on a variety of People-related subjects, across all groups of Firm members (e.g., Partners, client-serving consulting staff, knowledge professionals, and administrative support / Firm Functions)
Providing counsel on FMLA, ADA and related issues, discrimination and harassment allegations, and terminations (including role eliminations and reductions in force)
Developing and reviewing template offer letters, as well as employment contracts for offices outside the US.
Advising the Firm’s strategic inorganic growth and New Ventures groups (e.g., McKinsey Solutions, McKinsey Digital Labs); providing support on People-related dimensions of transactions and partnerships with third parties
Advising on People-related issues relating to the Firm’s organic growth initiatives, including office openings, and launches of new practices and Solutions
Managing the firm’s involvement in actual or potential employment litigation; advising and supporting internal personnel investigations
Advising Partner stakeholders and leaders of diversity & inclusion and recruiting functions
Advising on non-compete and similar agreements to which our experienced hires may be subject
Drafting and negotiating agreements with independent contractors, and working with Tax & Compensation and Benefits colleagues on various issues including appropriate classification of third party service providers
Managing and working with the firm's outside employment counsel globally
Minimum 7 years experience
In-house and top law firm experience is preferred
Top academic credentials
Multinational experience is preferred
Excellent written and oral communications skills
Confident team player who is highly collaborative and flexible
Keen ability to influence and problem-solve
Ability to work independently
Impeccable business judgment and ethics
Ability to develop own relationships and network
