This Novus lawyer will serve as the primary legal liaison with, and partner with, advise, and provide support to, the Novus global Human Resources (HR) team, and address global compliance matters. Work will include legal support by advising on and drafting global HR legal-related policies, advising on general employment matters and company’s global benefit plans, and any other employment/labor legal work related to Novus’s diverse work force. The role will also assume the lead on global compliance matters, including identifying and addressing compliance issues, participating in quarterly compliance committee meetings, and conducting regular compliance training for Novus employees around the world. The role will work with and report directly to the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, and work side-by-side with the headquarters HR team as well as Novus’s regional HR managers (located in China, Thailand, Spain, Brazil, Mexico).
As Novus continues to expand its work force and operations both in the U.S. and abroad, its business has become more diverse and complex. This role will need to be proactive in ensuring that Novus has the right labor policies, procedures, and plans in place to comply with local laws and regulations, and as advisable to protect the company from potential liability and for “best practices”. In addition, to ensure that Novus’s worldwide operations are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, this role will need to keep abreast of recent developments in laws that impact Novus’s operations (e.g., U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act, EU General Data Protection Regulations), and advise on how Novus can best comply with both existing and anticipated future laws. The compliance component of this role’s work will also involve conducting compliance training. As Novus embarks on several major business expansion initiatives, this role will have the opportunity to work on the labor aspects of and compliance requirements for major projects that will directly contribute to and influence the future direction of the Company. The successful candidate must be willing to work within a fast-paced, often stress-filled environment where knowledge and experience in both U.S. and global HR matters, coupled with creativity and the ability to “think outside the box”, are the keys to success. Travel required up to approximately 25%-35%, including internationally.
Providing legal advice to Novus’s HR function around the world on a wide variety of issues.
Negotiating, drafting, and reviewing agreements related to labor/employment.
Creation and drafting company HR legal and compliance-related policies.
Advise the Company on employment/labor matters and corporate compliance globally.
Advise on appropriate policies and procedures to ensure Company’s foreign subsidiaries, branches, and representative offices are compliant with applicable laws and regulations, including labor laws (e.g., country mandated employee handbooks).
Work with, manage, and ensure cost effective services from outside counsel.
Assist in the development of the annual legal budget, and provide input on managing costs to keep legal expenses in-line with budgeted amounts.
As requested, advise on other legal matters that relate to the Company’s business, particularly related to general corporate and international matters.
Professional Experience: Candidates for the position will have previous experience working within a corporate legal department or law firm with extensive experience in employment law/compliance matters.
Cultural Fit and Values: The successful candidate will be collaborative, analytical, flexible and proactive. This position is one that works side-by-side with Novus’s business people, primarily from HR; this is not someone who merely advises remotely.
Education/Credentials: Candidates will possess a JD and be licensed to practice in Missouri (or willing to apply for admission from another state). For practice in Missouri, must be admitted pursuant to Rule 8 or Rule 8.105 of the Supreme Court Rules of the State of Missouri pursuant to Rule 4—Rules Governing the Missouri Bar and the Judiciary—Rules of Professional Conduct, Rule 4-5.5(d).
Requires at least 10+ years of hands-on experience in employment/labor legal matters.
Corporate in-house legal experience working closely with or supporting a Human Resources Department within a multi-national corporation preferred.
Experience handling and resolving compliance matters.
A degree of scientific/chemical industry background or experience helpful.
Prefer an individual who has worked for an organization with both a U.S. and international (ex-U.S.) work force.
Superior communication skills including excellent command of the English language (spoken and written), with the ability to tailor style, content and delivery to a wide range of clients.
Demonstrated leadership ability.
Licensed to practice in Missouri or willing to become licensed.
Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally. Travel estimated to be about 25%-35% annually.
Excellent communication and drafting skills.
Excellent presentation and relationship-building skills; works well collaboratively; sensitive to cultural differences within a global organization and resulting impact on work environment and legal compliance.
