Founded more than 80 years ago, and with more than 450,000 members, PSECU is one of the largest credit unions in Pennsylvania. Reporting to the President, and working closely with executives, managers and the Board, the General Counsel position has two key elements:
• Providing strong leadership to, and management of, Corporate Legal Services (with four lawyers, an operations manager and three paralegals); and • Providing pro-active, value-added professional advice and support to the President, executives and managers, and the Board on critical legal and policy issues.
Some of the General Counsel’s duties include: developing and implementing a vision and strategic plan for the Credit Union’s legal services; leading the legal team and ensuring effective team performance; establishing and managing a budget for CLS and ensuring predictability of legal expense; ensuring that PSECU operates within an appropriate legal and governance framework, taking ultimate accountability for identification and management of legal risks across the organization; advising the President, senior management and the Board on legal risk and other strategic issues that have a legal impact; and accountability for the management of the quality and cost of external legal services providers.
Among other things, the General Counsel must possess the following qualifications:
• Graduate of an ABA-accredited law school, admitted to practice and in good standing in at least one jurisdiction, with the ability to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; • Significant post-qualification legal experience at a senior level, preferably gained in both private practice and an in-house corporate setting; • Stature and confidence to operate at the executive level, while managing various stakeholder agendas and client service standards; • Ability to establish credibility as a trusted advisor with the President, senior management, the Board and outside counsel; and • Ability to prioritize and execute quickly while maintaining quality of judgment and delivery.
The compensation package is commensurate with the position and responsibilities. The successful candidate likely will have excellent academic credentials and proven executive and management experience and skills. Prior experience as the General Counsel of a major profit or non-profit organization is preferred, as is experience as corporate counsel in a financial institution.
