General Commercial/Contracts, Intellectual Property
About the role:
The global Digital Science business is growing rapidly, particularly in the US and is currently advised by a single dedicated lawyer based in London, with support from its parent company - Holtzbrinck - based in Germany. This role (broad base commercial/IT/IP) will be involved in the drafting and negotiation of agreements of all types, but with an emphasis on software-as-a-service and data licenses, and will be expected to develop a general knowledge of the law typically encountered in respect of digital products and services.
Working closely with the Head of Legal in London, this role will act as the US-based legal support for Digital Science and its portfolio companies, and so must have the confidence to work autonomously (although lots of help will be available). We are a fast-paced, rapidly evolving business, so the position requires someone who can be flexible and is excellent at prioritising, and who enjoys a challenge and isn’t fazed dealing with whatever is thrown their way.
The position is part-time (3 to 4 days a week).
This role is expected to have the following qualifications/experience:
Admitted to the Massachusetts Bar.
5-7 years of experience practising law at a reputable US law firm or in-house in a technology company.
Strong background in commercial contracts (in particular technology licensing).
Good working knowledge of soft intellectual property, especially copyright.
While scientific qualifications are not essential, an interest in scientific research would be a strong advantage, as would experience of US Government procurement (e.g. FAR) and/or supporting on M&A activity from an IP perspective.
