G&S has been exclusively engaged by our client, a premier on-line education partner for colleges and universities, to assist in its search for a Senior Privacy & Cybersecurity Counsel to build and manage the company’s global privacy program. This Senior Privacy Counsel will report to the General Counsel and handle sophisticated domestic and international privacy matters as part of a rapidly expanding and highly collegial legal team based in the company’s suburban Maryland headquarters office.
Primary responsibilities include: Building and improving the company’s privacy program by reviewing existing data and privacy processes and developing an organization-wide risk management and compliance framework; creating formalized responses to data breach incidents; counseling all business units on information privacy and data protection best practices; designing, implementing and training employees on the company’s Incident Response Plan; and monitoring and advising the company on international and domestic privacy legislation.
This position is appealing for several reasons: Our client is a market leader in its field with arguably the most successful education technology IPO to date; the company’s “employee-focused culture” is extremely casual (yet professional) and collaborative; the Senior Counsel will have the opportunity to thoroughly learn the business working hand-in-glove with a well-trained compliance team and other key business units, as well as have the support of a more junior privacy counsel (who G&S placed with the company last year); and the hours are predictable at 9am-6:30pm with the possibility to telecommute one day a week. Finally, the combination of base salary, bonus and stock award is on the high-end of compensation packages in the DC Metro in-house market.
Qualified candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of experience at a private law firm and/or an in-house legal department focusing on domestic and international privacy matters (including experience developing and implementing a global privacy program). In-depth knowledge of FTC and EU privacy and data protection laws and enforcement is required, and CIPP/US, CIPP/E and/or CIPP/M certifications are a plus.
