Best Buy has an immediate opening at its Richfield, Minnesota, corporate headquarters for an attorney to serve in the position of Corporate Counsel – Privacy and Information Policy, in Best Buy’s Risk and Compliance team.
As Corporate Counsel – Privacy and Information Policy, you’ll have a broad range of responsibilities and the opportunity to help shape Best Buy’s privacy and information policy program. We’re looking for a diligent and proactive attorney who can work both autonomously and collaboratively with internal clients at every level of the organization, as well as with vendors/external partners.
This position will assist the Sr. Counsel with the provision of day-to-day advice and counsel in all aspects of privacy and information policy, and other related compliance areas. A portion of the work will include drafting and negotiating privacy, security, and records management contract provisions in collaboration with other members of Best Buy’s legal department mitigate risk.
Understand full scope of a corporate privacy and information security compliance program, including data flows, risk assessment, and vendor management.
Oversee training to facilitate and promote privacy, records management and ediscovery awareness within the enterprise.
Review, draft, and negotiate contracts and provisions relating to privacy, e-discovery, and records management.
Provide legal and strategic business advice to partners across the organization to drive compliance with internal policies, stated and federal privacy and information management laws, and industry best practices.
Identify areas of potential privacy vulnerability/risk at all levels (from single request to enterprise) and propose solutions/corrective action plans to prevent/mitigate/resolve such risks.
Respond to customer, partner, vendor, third party, and consumer privacy and compliance inquiries.
Monitor, research, analyze, and provide advice on industry trends, existing, proposed, and new laws, and policies regarding their impact to the company.
Other responsibilities as needed.
JD degree from an ABA accredited law school, admitted to practice law in at least one state, and outstanding academic credentials (if not licensed in Minnesota must be willing to become licensed in Minnesota).
Minimum of 5 years of legal practice (whether in-house or private practice)
3 or more years of practice in privacy
5 or more years of demonstrated work experience drafting and negotiating sophisticated contract provisions relating to privacy, information security, and records management, whether in private practice or as in-house counsel.
Superior written and oral communication skills evidencing the ability to professionally draft contracts and other legal and operational documentation that protect Best Buy’s interests, successfully negotiate favorable terms, and clearly articulate recommendations to and from business clients.
Experience in e-discovery and records management is highly preferred and preference will be given to candidates with this experience.
Highly professional and adept at finding creative and practical solutions.
Strong organizational and analytical skills, a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, excellent client relation skills, detail oriented, and an ability to work quickly and independently in a fast paced corporate environment.
