The General Counsel reports to the President of Metropolitan State University of Denver and the MSU Denver Board of Trustees. General Counsel performs a broad array of legal duties for the Board of Trustees, the President, administrative staff and campus committees under the President’s direction. This position also serves as Secretary to the Board of Trustees which reports to the Board and the President and executes all Board related functions in compliance with applicable laws and policies. The institution’s size, diversity, and urban setting promise a varied and challenging workload emphasizing public law, employment and civil rights, transactional matters, litigation, corporate governance, legislative drafting and analysis, and the law of student and academic affairs. The position is subject to designation as an Assistant Attorney General at the discretion of the Attorney General of the State of Colorado.

Serves in the capacity as chief legal officer, serves on the President’s Cabinet and provides supervision and management of all legal matters affecting Metropolitan State University of Denver in addition to providing legal representation to the University in all legal matters, including interpreting laws, regulations and policies, conducting investigations, and directing litigation.
Works on a variety of legal matters including student and employment concerns, research compliance, intellectual property and technology transfer, constitutional law, regulatory and other laws, construction, real property and local governmental regulation, administrative law, athletics, liability issues, contracts, business and corporate matters, open meetings and public records issues.
Works closely with University Vice Presidents and staff, including the office of Academic and Student Affairs, Business/Finance office, Equal Opportunity and Human Resources on a variety of compliance, grievance, training, and personnel matters.
As Secretary to the Board of Trustees, provides the infrastructure necessary for the Board of Trustees to discharge its fiduciary obligations. Duties include organizing and staffing all Board and committee meetings and executive sessions; creating and distributing Board materials in collaboration with the President and Vice Presidents; maintaining Board records, budget and technology infrastructure; performing Board orientation; analysis and revision of Board enabling statues, policies and bylaws; interface with the Governor’s office regarding Board vacancies and appointments; supervising related staff; and ensuring compliance with applicable open records and meetings laws and other statutes regarding the Board’s authority. The Board Secretary communicates regularly with the President, Chair and Vice Chair as well as individual members of the Board of Trustees concerning critical issues and needs of the Board.
J.D. from an ABA accredited law school with a good to excellent academic record.
Admitted to the Colorado Bar (by the time of appointment) and in good standing.
12 years of experience as a practicing attorney. 5 years of that experience in higher education law.
8 years of experience in a complex higher education, government, non-profit, corporate or other organization with comparable complexity.
Experience supervising/managing other attorneys, department staff, outside consultants, and budgets.
At least 5 years of full-time experience representing a public institution of higher education.
Excellent academic record and credentials.
Previous in-house legal experience.
Experience handling or managing litigation.
Experience serving as legal advisor and/or providing support, as outlined in the job duties, to a Board of Trustees or similarly situated Board.
Knowledge and experience working with complex governmental institutions and their applicable laws and regulations.
Evidence of expertise in three or more of the practice areas specified in the job description.
Superior research, analytical, and writing skills.
Ability to prioritize and handle a significant and varied workload.
Demonstrated interest in working at an educational institution with MSU Denver’s mission and challenges.
