Our client, a publicly traded food ingredients company, is looking for an Assistant General Counsel, Regulatory, for its legal department at the company headquarters in Central New Jersey. This role reports to the Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer & Corporate Secretary. This attorney will serve as a legal advsior to all levels of management regarding regulatory matters and business counseling with a primary focus on the company's compliance with food, environmental, health and safety laws and regulations. The role requires an experienced attorney with expertise as either a food, drug, environmental, health or safety lawyer, but who also has an interest in becoming a generalist managing a broad array of regulatory related legal issues important to the company.
Provide advice and legal counsel to all levels of management on FDA-related laws, statutes, and regulations both in the US and internationally. Manage outside counsel for such matters, including food law related issues in foreign jurisdictions;
Support the regulatory affiars function at the company, including the ability to directly provide legal advice (or manage outside counsel) on various technical matters in a form readily comprehensible to internal business clients;
Assist in development and implementation of training programs related to FDA, FTC, and good manufacturing practices programs for the company;
Provide advice and legal counsel to all levels of management on environmental, health and safety related laws, statutes and regulations both in the US and internationally;
Work with EH&S staff, including advising and helping represent the company on complex EH&S compliance and enforcement matters. Coordinate legal advice and manage outside counsel for such matters, including compliance issues in foreign jurisdictions;
Negotiate and provide legal advice regarding various regulatory and compliance related agreements and certifications, including quality agreements and various compliance certifications and questionnaires;
Efficiently manage outside counsel on related litigation matters, including customer and vendor complaints and disputes;
Review and maintain legal compliance programs and policies at the company, including ethics, antibribery and antitrust programs;
Monitor and advise the company's management on emerging laws, regulations and deveopments in the industry related to food, environmental, health and safety matters;
Assist with review of and provide legal advice on advertising and promotional materials, including product labels and review of branded product materials.
JD degree from an accredited law school;
At least 5+ years of specialized regulatory or compliance law experience in either food, drug, environmental, health or safety laws and regulations at a major law firm and/or in-house department;
Active membership and in good standing in at least one state bar with the ability to be certified in NJ as an in-house attorney;
Must have an interest in becoming a generalist on multiple regulatory and compliance matters;
Must be self-motivated and have superior negotiation and relationship skills because coordinating, collaborating and communicating with business team members across multiple functions is a major requirement of this position;
Must possess excellent business and legal judgment, strategic thinking and problem solving;
Must be highly adaptive and able to handle evolving situations and multiple projects simultaneously;
Must be organized with strong verbal and writing skills;
International and/or manufacturing experience a plus.
