The Johnson & Wales University Office of General Counsel seeks an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant General Counsel to support a wide-range of legal needs as directed by the General Counsel.
The field of higher education law encompasses the myriad legal matters affecting colleges and universities. Institutions of higher education hire attorneys to identify, analyze, and provide advice on the broad range of legal issues they encounter in a dynamic environment. Attorneys also assist in developing policies and helping to prevent and to resolve legal disputes. Higher education attorneys typically find their positions challenging but personally and professionally rewarding and have a very satisfying work/life balance.
Higher education attorneys ideally possess excellent judgment, critical thinking ability, and strong writing and reasoning skills. They must have high ethical standards, discretion, and the ability to forge consensus from multiple views and needs. They should model collegiality and civility in all of their communications and actions. They must handle multiple matters simultaneously and objectively, maintaining a professional and thoughtful demeanor. They are able to think strategically as well pay careful attention to detail. They enjoy working with an intellectually stimulating and engaging group of institutional colleagues who have high expectations of their legal counsel. Most of all, they have a strong and visible commitment to the institution’s goals of learning, exploring new ideas and solving problems.
The Office of General Counsel, located in Providence, RI, provides legal representation and advice to Johnson & Wales University on a broad range of legal issues including business transactions, compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, government grants and contracts, litigation, labor and employment, faculty and student issues, privacy, intellectual property, information technology law, safety and environmental law, health law, real estate, international issues, and non-profit matters. The office provides advice on legal exposures and engaging in preventive lawyering, including educational programs. All attorneys are expected to collaborate effectively internally and externally to address the legal needs of the University.
J.D. degree required. The individual must be a member of, or able to obtain prompt reciprocal admission to, the Rhode Island Bar. Five+ years of legal experience (more is desirable), with demonstrated significant expertise in at least one of the above-noted areas.
Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills.
Ability to collaborate with colleagues and with other university professionals across a variety of disciplines.
Intellectual curiosity, flexibility, a concern for others, and interest in learning additional areas of relevant law.
Proficiency with office computer technologies.
Ability to work successfully as a team member in an office that handles a high volume and varied portfolio of legal matters.
Experience in more than a single noted practice area.
Experience in higher education law; however, attorneys with experience representing private sector companies, either in private practice or in-house or some combination thereof, are also encouraged to apply
