The Director of Corporate Legal Operations will be responsible for driving and supporting the Travelers Corporate Legal Department’s operational excellence and will report to the General Counsel. Legal Operations is focused primarily on driving efficiency and productivity, implementing solutions, tools and systems to automate processes, promoting professional development, improving matter management and knowledge management capabilities, and improving communications. The successful candidate must build strong relationships with the various functions within the Corporate Legal Department and other stakeholders within the company, including IT, HR, Finance and other operational groups. Position will require strong emphasis on strategic vision and planning, including accountability for the department’s work processes and systems strategy.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Manage and lead operations across the Corporate Legal Department including:
Developing and executing on a Legal Operations strategy, by continuing to grow and develop the legal operations function on an established maturity model
Identifying and implementing methods to improve efficiency and productivity across various substantive legal practice areas
Collaborating with senior Corporate Legal Department leadership and IT partners to identify use cases for technology initiatives -- including matter management, e-billing, knowledge management and document management -- and owning the entire life cycle of those initiatives, including strategy, implementation, and ongoing maintenance
Executing strategies for developing and managing expenses and performance of outside counsel and other vendors, including improving processes for governance of retention and billing guidelines
Working with Finance for budgeting, forecasting, and monitoring actual performance against budgets and forecasts
Supporting the planning and logistics of key internal Corporate Legal Department events
Participate in CLOC, ILTA and similar legal operations organizations and initiatives
Guide and support communications approach and strategy about Corporate Legal Department information, developments, and resources
Implement and manage consistent Corporate Legal Department metrics through benchmarking, reporting, and dashboards
Collaborate with HR to implement/manage training and professional development initiatives for Corporate Legal Department personnel
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in managing a Legal Operations function or equivalent
Education, Work Experience & Knowledge:
B.A. or B.S. degree
Demonstrated experience building, running and managing legal or operational programs/projects/processes
Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of employees
Proven leadership and change management abilities
Demonstrated track record of leading strategic initiatives
