We are looking for a creative, collaborative, results-oriented attorney to join our growing state energy regulatory practice team and represent the company in regulatory matters before the North Carolina Utilities Commission. The qualified individual should have first or second chair administrative litigation experience; preferably in the electric utility or natural gas industry, and experience in managing litigation and discovery matters. The Associate General Counsel will prepare and litigate base rate cases, and fuel and other clause or rider proceedings. Experience in renewable energy matters is a plus.
Additional responsibilities will include:providing legal advice and counsel to executives and management regarding highly complex regulatory matters, which may have a material financial impact on business operations, including matters such as compliance, utility services, pricing, rates, customer service, transmission, distribution and generation planning, fuel procurement and system operations, tariffs, territorial assignment, renewable energy, demand side management and energy efficiency, rulemaking, rider proceedings, and regulatory accounting issues; preparing pleadings and legal memoranda; conducting direct and cross-examination of witnesses; and retaining and managing outside counsel and expert witnesses.
The individual should have excellent presentation and writing skills, the ability to quickly master complex legal and regulatory issues, and to work effectively across business functions in a matrixed organization.
Local and overnight travel 10-15% of the time
Position is located in Raleigh, NC or Charlotte, NC
Doctor of Jurisprudence degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in the United States
Seven (7) years minimum experience in a government, law firm or corporate law department, or five (5) years relevant experience in the electric utility or gas industry
Effective legal research and writing skills
Strong communication and presentation skills
Utility regulatory/agency experience
Effective litigation experience and skills
Barred in North Carolina or eligible for comity
Experience in rate making proceedings
Experience in interacting with multiple stakeholders/collaborative groups in reaching multi-party resolutions
Ability to work independently and with a group of people for long hours under deadline pressures
Ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously
Broad, in-depth knowledge and experience in the energy industry
Knowledge of Duke Energy and its various business operations
Strong, effective communication and interpersonal skills
Sound judgment and decision making skills
Ability to collaborate as an effective member of the team
