In-House Position
Start-up Litigation Financing Fund Seeks Seasoned Litigator with 15+ years’ Experience for Strategic & Entrepreneurial Business Role

A start up fund that will engage in funding of commercial litigation and arbitration claims in the US and globally is looking for its Chief Investment Officer.

Position Risk Profile: The right candidate should be willing to take risk in exchange for equity upside and be able to think and act like a principal in a business as opposed to an adviser who “gets paid by the hour.” The right candidate will work hand-in-hand with other founders of the fund in a capacity similar to the general counsel or senior partner in an investment fund in terms of level of responsibility.

Responsibilities:

As the CIO, your responsibilities will include:

• Generate case flow by leveraging relationships with senior partners in top firms and corporate counsel • Provide preliminary assessment of merits of the case, parties involved (including counsel on both sides, defendants, judges, experts etc.) and assess potential settlement / award quantum and timing • Develop and document “underwriting standards and practices” framework to be used in case evaluation • Negotiate transaction terms with fundee entities • Monitor case progress and developments and intervene as necessary • Participate in capital raising activities as necessary

Location: Greater New York area

Compensation: To be negotiated. As noted above, since this is akin to a co-founder’s role in a start-up venture, you should be willing to take risk in exchange for equity upside.

Process: Interested qualified candidates should contact Dimitri Mastrocola at Major Lindsey & Africa (MLA) via email: dmastrocola@mlaglobal.com . Please include a resume (which will be kept in strict confidence) and/or brief description of why you believe you are a fit for the role. No phone calls, please. We regret that applicants will only be contacted if they are being considered as potential candidates for the position.

Requirements
Candidate Skills Profile: Seasoned litigator with 15+ years of experience handling complex commercial cases (anti-trust, insurance, contract disputes, etc.) with top law firm. Additional experience as a General Counsel is preferred. The successful candidate will have (a) proven and successful track record litigating complex commercial cases, (b) excellent relationships and reputation in the legal community, (c) superior judgment and ability to evaluate both tangible and intangible factors that affect the strength of the claim, settlement / judgment amount and likely duration and (d) high energy, good business sense and entrepreneurial spirit.
